Reading Your Transmission Oil

*EASY*

Like automatic transmission fluid, manual transmission oil should also be changed if it does not look or smell new. Manual transmission (gear) oil is usually a clear, golden brown in color. Compare the color of your transmission oil with that of new gear oil by placing several drops of each on a white cloth or paper napkin. If your transmission oil is noticeably darker than the fresh gear oil, your transmission oil should be changed.

Likewise, if your transmission oil looks or smells burned, or contains fine metallic particles, it should be changed. Periodically look under your vehicle to note any transmission oil leakage. If leakage is noted, have the leak repaired.
